Audubon Birds
Presenting Audubon™
Birds by Wild Republic®, a collection of
original realistic plush beanbag birds with
authentic sounds. These beanbag marvels are a
perfect replica of the original species in the
way they look and sound. Wild Republic, the toy
brand of K&M International, Inc., has partnered
with Audubon to create this line of genuine
plush birds. Each bird's lifelike design and
detailing is the result of input from Audubon.
In addition, the authentic sound in each bird
has been provided by the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology and represents hours, months and
even years of extensive fieldwork conducted by
expert recordists.
American
Goldfinches are found throughout the United
States and southern Canada. Males' bright yellow
feathers contrast dramatically with the black
patches on their head and wings. Females and
juveniles are a duller yellow. During their
short, swooping flights, goldfinches often make
twittering sounds. Though some migrate south for
the winter months, others stay put and are
frequent visitors to backyard feeders. During
winter months the plumage of both sexes become
gray-brown. $7.95
The brilliant Mountain Bluebird is Idaho's state
bird. During summer, they are found at higher
elevations of mountain forests in western North
America. During winter, they migrate south to
desert areas. Their diet consists mainly of
insects, fruits and berries. Loss of woodland
habitat has made finding nesting sites
increasingly difficult for this species. As a
result, bluebirds enjoy and benefit from
man-made birdhouses $7.95
Bat Houses
Are you
looking for a natural method of pest control?
Try a Bat House. A single bat can consume as
many as 500 mosquitoes in one hour's time.
For this reason alone it's a great idea to
provide a roosting site where you live and play.
Jeff Brown at Wild Bird Products makes Bat
houses in two sizes. These houses are made
of recycled red cedar and feature two roosting
crevices and a rough interior for a good toe
hold. The back is pre-drilled for easy
installation

Daniel's Birdhouses
We
are happy to present Daniel Anderman from right
here in Leavenworth. He is a young man who loves
to work with tools. He also has Down syndrome.
Several years ago a school counselor came up
with an idea designed to meet several needs.
He helped Daniel combine his love of working
with tools and wood to build Mountain Bluebird
houses. The Mountain Bluebird had once been
plentiful in our valley, but in 1994, North
Central Washington's enormous and devastating
forest fire had destroyed the bird's natural
habitat. The local middle school's ecology club
took Daniel's birdhouses as a project and began
hanging them throughout the valley. His
bird houses started to appear at trailheads,
along fence lines, along mountain roads and in
meadows. Now Daniel builds four birdhouses a day
and does ninety percent of the work himself. He
cuts the recycled cedar lumber with a chop saw,
drills the entrance hold with a drill press. He
uses a jig to hold pieces in place for assembly
and drills screw holes and puts in screws.
Daniel's
Mountain Bluebird houses sell for $20.00 each.
Each house
comes with two screws to attach it to something
else and all the money goes back into buying
lumber, making it a self-sustaining project.
